34th Warsaw Theatre Meetings

34th  WARSAW THEATRE MEETINGS

4-14 April 2014 THE DRAMATIC THEATRE of the capital city of  Warsaw

Acclaimed performances by Jan Klata, Maja Kleczewska and the Janiczak-Rubin duo. The widely discussed ,,Wesele” / "The Wedding” of Marcin Libera from Teatr Polski
in Bydgoszcz, or „Kronos” by Krzysztof Garbaczewski from Teatr Polski in Wrocław. On top of that the reflective and sinister ,,Czarownice z Salem” / "Witches of Salem” by Adam Nalepa from Wybrzeże, ,,Lód” / "Ice” by Dukaj interpreted by Janusz Opryński and „Antyhona” based on Sophocles, transferred into Polish reality of the 1940s by Agnieszka Korytkowa-Mazur, are the mainstream plays of this year’s 34th Warsaw Theatre Meetings. As in the previous years, apart from performances for adults the programme of the festival also includes plays for children and numerous associated events, such as the concert „Jerzy Trela. Monologi” / “Jerzy Trela. Monologues” in the  Pokamedulski Church and a review of the main performances of the Malabar Hotel theatrical group.
The 34th Warsaw Theatre Meetings and the little Warsaw Theatre Meetings are organized by Teatr Dramatyczny in Warsaw, the City of Warsaw and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

DESCRIPTIONS OF PERFORMANCES 34th  WARSAW THEATRE MEETINGS

Podróż zimowa/Winter Journey
written by Elfriede Jelinek
directed by Maja Kleczewska
performed by Teatr Polski im. H. Konieczki in Bydgoszcz/Teatr Powszechny in Łódź

The spectacle is based on the newest and highly acclaimed text of the Nobel Prize winner, Elfriede Jelinek: “The Winter Journey”.
It tells the story about people who are overwhelmed with ideas, meanings and the past. Creators vet marriage as an institution, dependencies, sexual deviations making use of, amongst others, Natasha Kampusch and Fritzl’s cases. They examine madness, mental illness and death and so they create a song about passing, private reckoning and a goodbye. The human being quits all the questions except for one: “Who am I?”

Caryca Katarzyna/Catherine the Great
written by Jolanta Janiczak
directed by Wiktor Rubin
performed by Teatr im. S. Żeromskiego in Kielce

"A challenge thrown into a man’s world", "subversive show", "history as a porn tale" – this is how critics described  Jolanta Janiczak and Wiktor Rubin’s play after its premiere. This shamelessly poetic and innocently forcible performance is by no means a historical story about a 15-year-old Prussian princess born in Szczecin, Zofia Anhalt-Zerbst, who became the Empress of Russia and amateur of all men. Instead, creators show a story  concerning body, instincts, insignificant motives, lack of ideals, ambition and sadness.
They use forcible language reaching the very core of gender and cultural stereotypes.

Kronos
written by Witold Gombrowicz|
directed by Krzysztof Garbaczewski
performed by Teatr Polski in Wrocław

The most awaited book of the year of 2013, Witold Gombrowicz’s Kronos, for the first time on stage in Poland. The author of Ferdydurke and Diaries comes out as a chronicler of his own quotidian. He wants to stop the passing  time in his notes. He tries to make a kind of ritual out of the time, counting incomes, people whom he met, lovers, books which he read, illnesses. How can one answer him in the theatre? Only by his/her own kronos, time brought to a stop, vanishing caught in the act.
Attention: There are stroboscopic lamps used during the production!

The creators of the Bydgoszcz show intend to combine and collide a sociological observation with  an exploration of the spiritual and ritual subject matters hidden in Wyspiański’s masterpiece.

ANTYHONA
directed by Agnieszka Korytkowska Mazur

„Antyhona” is a story of the curse put on Creon and the house of the Labdakids, which comes true in the town of Krynki. Antigone, much like Theresa, is a young girl fighting alone against a nepotistic family that cannot afford to lose power that preserves its status quo. The rights of both parties contradict each other and a compromise cannot be reached. There is too much at stake. No good solutions, no winners, everybody is guilty, everybody pays a heavy price trying to defend their choices. The story is reflected in some local legends. For the first time, the issue of “rectifying Polish-Belorussian borders” has been presented in an art form.
The play „Antyhona” was produced as part of the scheme Wschód Kultury/Inny Wymiar (The Rise of Culture/Another Dimension).

Czarownice z Salem / The Witches of Salem
written by Arthur Miller
directed by Adam Nalepa

One of the most important American plays of the 20th century. The trials and executions of alleged witches which took place in 1692 in the American town of Salem formed a pretext for a discussion on contemporary reality, torn between religion and politics, which requires a constant fight against cynicism, envy and ruthlessness. It is an allegory and at the same time a brutal tale about how a seemingly trivial event, a group of innocent girls going dancing in the wood, sets in motion a spiral of events in which no holds are barred.

Translation: Anna Bańkowska, Adaptation: Adam Nalepa, Jakub Roszkowski,

direction: Marek Zákostelecký
performed by Wrocławski Teatr Lalek

Brzydkie  kaczątko/The Ugly Duckling
directed by Romuald Wicza-Pokojski
performed by Miejski Teatr Miniatur in Gdańsk

The problem of being different, unsuitable and in search for one’s identity is a universal theme and H. Ch. Andersen’s fairy tale is one of its most popular interpretations. “The Ugly Duckling” from The Miniatura Theatre reminds first and foremost that different does not mean ugly. In times of globalization, encounters with otherness are unavoidable. It is therefore crucial for children to remember this story and the meaning it carries.
